Cala Carbó
Type of beach pebbles
Cala Carbó

Cala Carbó is situated at 13 kilometres from Ciutadella and it is not an official beach, located between Cap de Ferro and Punta Roja (there are some reefs in the surroundings). Cap de Ferro has several layers. The strength of the air and sea currents gave it an aspect similar to an old warrior.

This isolated virgin sea inlet is characterized by being u-shaped, it is not very big, the vegetation is rare in the surroundings (it is surrounded by dark rocks of the hills of Bassa Verda –“green lake”-), the beach has pebbles, it is exposed to the winds from the north-southwest-northwest, a gentle breeze, a calm water, and a normal slope.

The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are not safe in front of its coast. The best anchorage is in the adjacent big bay of ses Fontanelles.

This bay is sheltered from the winds from the second and third quadrants, and it is deep enough to anchor. Nevertheless you are recommended to only navigate along the north coast of Menorca if the sea is calm because it is difficult to find a safe shelter from the strong wind in this area.

Although it is possible walk up to the beach, is easier to get it by boat.
To access by car, follow the signs and the deviations until the nearby Cala Algaiarens. On this beach, Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès, you will have to pay to leave your private car. From here you will have to walk for 1,5 kilometres to reach Cala Carbó.

When the beach has a lifeguard service, you must follow the lifeguards? instructions and the warnings on flags. A red flag indicates dangerous swimming conditions and means that swimming is not permitted. A yellow flag indicates that precaution must be taken, but that swimming is permitted. A green flag indicates that swimming is permitted. An orange flag is used to indicate that the lifeguard is absent. Act cautiously when no lifeguard is present or the service is not available and enjoy the beach without taking any unnecessary risks.

For health and safety reasons, the municipal ordinances ban pets on beaches.

Municipality information Ciutadella

The municipality of Ciutadella de Menorca is situated at the westernmost end of this island, and it is very important for its population, for the picturesque port and for being the bishop see. The name is given by the Christian king Alfons III d'Aragó with the conquest of Menorca. Ciutadella comes from the Latin word civitatella, from the diminutive of civitas. The former inhabitants used to call it Jamma, Iamo, Iamona, Municipium Flavium Iamontarum or medina Minurka. The organizer of the most important aspects of the menorcan life was king Jaume II de Mallorca. In 1301 he started to establish a defence system (cavalry) and parish (union) or the money. The 16th and 17th centuries were characterized by the violent Turkish pirate attacks. It used to be the capital until the English occupation (1708) which moved to Maó in 1722. The 19th century was a demographic, economic and cultural wake up, whereas since the 20th century until nowadays, the tourism is leading the economy, although the traditional handcraft of shoes and jewellery are still important.

Its cultural variety includes the festival of the patron saint, Sant Joan (on the 23rd and 24th o June), internationally known for the show with the riders and horses, and you should visit the old town, with narrow streets and particular buildings that preserve the presence of different civilizations that populated Ciutadella, the prehistoric vestiges, as well as the defence tower and other interesting places.
The municipality has 24 beaches.
