Arenal d'es Castell also known as Arenal d'en Castell

S’Arenal des/d'en Castell is a semi urban beach and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful places of the northern coast of Menorca, very near the village with the same name, some of the buildings reach the coastline, located between Raconada des Forats and ses Llautanies. This coastal corner is situated at nine kilometres from es Mercadal and at 13 kilometres from Alaior.

This sea inlet is semicircular, it has a huge size and the beach is sandy, with rare vegetation in the surroundings, a natural rocky and narrow entrance, the orientation is toward northeast, the swell is moderate, and it is surrounded by residential houses.

The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are good, it has a good size, there is enough depth and it has very sheltered anchorages (the most usual is located in the east).

This beach belongs to a bigger bay, surrounded by Punta Codolada and Taronger. On the side defended by Punta Codolada there are some dangerous reefs (Escull Gros, Escull d'en Truyol and Escull de s'Ofegas) which the navigator has to avoid when approaching s'Arenal d'en Castell. If you pass the natural breakwater of Punta Taronger you will find a small l-shaped sea inlet, which is sheltered from all winds, except from the northern air currents, and it is an alternative anchorage.

These characteristics explain that the beach is very crowded by local visitors and tourists.

When the beach has a lifeguard service, you must follow the lifeguards? instructions and the warnings on flags. A red flag indicates dangerous swimming conditions and means that swimming is not permitted. A yellow flag indicates that precaution must be taken, but that swimming is permitted. A green flag indicates that swimming is permitted. An orange flag is used to indicate that the lifeguard is absent. Act cautiously when no lifeguard is present or the service is not available and enjoy the beach without taking any unnecessary risks.

For health and safety reasons, the municipal ordinances ban pets on beaches.
This beach has received the 14001 environmental certification.

Municipality information Es Mercadal

The municipality of es Mercadal is situated in the geographic centre of Menorca, it grew next to the mount Toro (358 metres high, it is the highest mountain of the island). On the summit there is a defence tower (1558) and Santuari de la Verge del Toro (1670), patron saint of Menorca.

Once Menorca was conquered to the Moors (the footprint can be seen in the names of the rural fincas that begin with bini or al), by the Christian king Alfons III d'Aragó in 1287, some inhabitants from Girona established next to the mount Toro, raising a chapel for the patron saint of their town, Sant Narcís. King Jaume II established in 1301 the celebration of three menorcan markets around this parish.

The agricultural and farming sectors lead the municipal economy, guaranteeing the production of cheese with denomination of origin, the traditions and the preservation of this particular interior landscape of this island: green in the winter, stone walls and wooden barriers. There is also still a little industry of albarcas, the typical sandals of the farmers that are nowadays very popular for their design and simplicity.

The cultural variety includes the gastronomy, and especially the handcraft pastries (amargos, carquinyolis and guirlache), as well as Església de Sant Martín (Renaissance), the quiet streets with white houses (traditional architecture), the bridges over the torrent and the public water reservoir, still in use, built by the English governor Richard Kane.
The municipality has 17 beaches.
