Cala Tirant also known as Arenal de Tirant

Cala Tirant or Arenal de Tirant is situated next to the village Platges de Fornells (it has excellent panoramic views to the caps –capes- Fornells and Cavalleria), located between Punta Llarga and Negra, which are the two natural limits of the entrance to the big Badia de Tirant. It is located at 6,5 and 9,2 kilometres from Fornells and es Mercadal, respectively.

This sea inlet which is the origin of this cove is very big, the beach has fine-grained golden sand, a system of dunes and a wetland at the rear (with fixing vegetation, scrubland and tamarisks, as well as avifauna), there are buildings in the surroundings (semi urban beach), the orientation is toward north, gentle breeze, sea currents and moderate swell. This beach is in the interior of Badia de Tirant, located between the western headland of Fornells and the eastern coast of Cap de Cavalleria. Cala Tirant becomes dangerous if the wind blows from the north. Some big boats could not overcome the currents in the interior during a storm. There is a depth that ranges from five to six metres near the coast, as well as sandbanks and visible rocks. The navigator is recommended to enter and leave this bay from the west of the centre and not to approach the coast.

These characteristics explain that the beach is very crowded by local visitors and tourists.

When the beach has a lifeguard service, you must follow the lifeguards? instructions and the warnings on flags. A red flag indicates dangerous swimming conditions and means that swimming is not permitted. A yellow flag indicates that precaution must be taken, but that swimming is permitted. A green flag indicates that swimming is permitted. An orange flag is used to indicate that the lifeguard is absent. Act cautiously when no lifeguard is present or the service is not available and enjoy the beach without taking any unnecessary risks.

For health and safety reasons, the municipal ordinances ban pets on beaches.

Municipality information Es Mercadal

The municipality of es Mercadal is situated in the geographic centre of Menorca, it grew next to the mount Toro (358 metres high, it is the highest mountain of the island). On the summit there is a defence tower (1558) and Santuari de la Verge del Toro (1670), patron saint of Menorca.

Once Menorca was conquered to the Moors (the footprint can be seen in the names of the rural fincas that begin with bini or al), by the Christian king Alfons III d'Aragó in 1287, some inhabitants from Girona established next to the mount Toro, raising a chapel for the patron saint of their town, Sant Narcís. King Jaume II established in 1301 the celebration of three menorcan markets around this parish.

The agricultural and farming sectors lead the municipal economy, guaranteeing the production of cheese with denomination of origin, the traditions and the preservation of this particular interior landscape of this island: green in the winter, stone walls and wooden barriers. There is also still a little industry of albarcas, the typical sandals of the farmers that are nowadays very popular for their design and simplicity.

The cultural variety includes the gastronomy, and especially the handcraft pastries (amargos, carquinyolis and guirlache), as well as Església de Sant Martín (Renaissance), the quiet streets with white houses (traditional architecture), the bridges over the torrent and the public water reservoir, still in use, built by the English governor Richard Kane.
The municipality has 17 beaches.
