Es Canons also known as Sa Banyera dels Ermitans, Es Moreros

Es Canons, the name comes from the forest area with the same name and the rests of the nearby coastal artillery), sa Banyera dels Ermitans or es Maresos (old quarry) is situated at 16 kilometres from Artà, between sa Ferradura and Punta de Calo's Cans or Ca los Camps.

This cove is very near the village of Betlem and below the Ermita and the public area with the same name (300 metres above the sea level), as well as sa Coassa (321 metres high). All this area belongs to the Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès Muntanyes d'Artà.

The coast of es Canons, which goes from Punta de ses Saupes until es Maresos, presents a scrubland and bush vegetation, as well as an irregular form, a steep profile and a particular shape. There are lots of stone headlands and small cliffs (fossil dunes with some rocky rests). In this place there are two bigger sea inlets, one after the other, s'Aigo Dolca-sa Ferradura and sa Banyera dels Ermitans-es Maresos (in the surroundings there is the megalithic tomb of s'Aigo Dolça, one of the oldest architectural features in Majorca).

The marine and underwater conditions are not good at all for anchoring boats in front of this cove because there are lots of rocks, it is not very deep and the ground is full of seaweed, stones and some sandy areas. These inconvenients are the reason why in this area there are only boats with little draught. The nearest port facilities are located at Port Colònia de Sant Pere.

Municipality information Artà

The municipality of Artà is situated at the north-eastern end of Majorca and it has one of the minor densities of population (43 inhabitants per square kilometre).

The name might be given by the Arab word Yartan, which was the name of this area during the Islamic period. The Christian king Jaume I who conquered Majorca (1229) called it Almudaina d'Artano, and it was named town in 1230 with the arrival of the premonstratense monks.

The landscape is formed by a wide central valley, surrounded by the mountains and a coastal area with system of dunes and some rocky areas. It has the highest hills of Serres de Llevant (sa Talaia Freda, 562 metres, and Puig d'en Ferrutx, 519 metres) and the Torrent de na Borges, in the mouth of which you can find Estany del Bisbe, which is two kilometres long.

There are endemic plants in danger of extinction of the Balearic archipelago, like holm oaks, bushes, pine woods and scrubland in this municipality. And some protected species like the black vulture, the fishing eagle or the kite fly over this place.

The tourism and the construction replaced the agricultural activity and the industry in the seventies of the 20th century. This municipality has the Teatre d'Artà (with a capacity for 460 people) since 2001, one of the best infrastructures of Majorca.

Its cultural variety includes Talaiot de ses Païses, Monestir de Bellpuig, Església de Sant Salvador, Església parroquial, Ermita de Betlem, edificio señorial de na Batlessa, where the painter Miquel Barceló has his graphic works.
The municipality has 14 beaches.
